In 2008, the Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration (JRA), where youth committing serious offenses are held, reported that more than 60% of youth held in JRA facilities have “significant mental health issues,” and 85% of the youth in residential care are substance abusers or chemically dependent. On December 11th eighty-five advocates for kids packed the Native Project conference room to hear from Spokane area legislative leaders - including Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown. Advocates heard grim predictions about the impact of the economic crisis on kids and families. At the same time the advocates present reaffirmed a strong commitment to protect kids - especially during tough times. Thanks to all who participated, and especially to the Native Project for hosting.
About twenty dedicated advocates for children gathered in Everett on December 10th to look ahead to the next legislative session. While there was much difficult news about how the tough economic times are impacting kids in Snohomish county - everyone present reaffirmed their commitment to advocate for kids in the upcoming legislative session. In 2006, 35,285 juveniles were arrested in Washington; there are 2,478 children and teens in juvenile or adult correctional facilities. In the U.S. more than 2 million teens are arrested each year
