The budget cuts’ impact on kids

It’s the worst we’ve seen.

That’s our assessment of new cuts to state services. The across-the-board budget reductions are more severe than anything we’ve experienced recently. They’re also being made in an extremely challenging context.

The budget that was finalized this spring, during the last legislative session, did not anticipate the persistently slow economy. And, rather than our elected representatives deliberating in public over cuts, these decisions are being made by the Governor in consultation with agency secretaries and assistant secretaries. They are decisions as momentous as any made during the last legislative session, only without legislators convening to hear and represent their constituents’ concerns.

New rules should give families affordable choices for health coverage

The federal Affordable Care Act was signed into law nearly two years ago. Since then, we at the Children’s Alliance, alongside health advocates across the state, have been working to make health care reform a reality in Washington.

In the next few weeks, health care leaders in the state House and Senate will take a crucial next step: They’ll set up ground rules for the state’s new Health Insurance Exchange.

Three Washingtonians speak up for dental care

Read the experiences of three Washingtonians who are speaking up to improve access to dental care.

“It’s about what the people need. It’s hard to get dental care, and this new provider could fill the gap and reach more people who need preventative care so they don’t face the kind of problems I am facing.” - Kim Rice, Vancouver
